Steve G

Echoes of Freedom, every story has a song

Meet Steve G, a proud native of Plaster Rock, NB, whose roots are deeply intertwined with rural traditions of fishing, hunting, and farm work, all harmonized by the tunes of Country and Gospel music.

Steve's musical odyssey traces back to his early days, sparked by the influence of friends, which led him to drumming in church settings and country gatherings. His journey took a distinctive turn when he joined the Army Cadets at the age of 14, delving into diverse military escapades during summer camps.

Post high school, Steve ventured into the world of lumber mills while concurrently pursuing flying lessons with aspirations of becoming a private pilot. A defining moment at the mill spurred a shift in his trajectory, propelling him to apply to the RCMP and the Canadian Armed Forces.

Opting for a military scholarship, he embarked on a transformative chapter at the Royal Military College, immersing himself in Strategic Studies and Psychology alongside rigorous military training. Balancing academics, Steve also showcased his athletic prowess through college football and sharpened his marksmanship skills as a competitive pistol shooter for the RMC team.

Upon graduation, Steve's path led him to the Royal Canadian Dragoons, where he served across the expanse of Canada and undertook deployments to Bosnia. Amid the rigors of military
life, his zest for adventure extended to pursuits like SCUBA diving and parachuting.

Despite the demands of his military career, his passion for music persisted. Transitioning from drums to guitar, Steve embarked on a self-taught musical journey, occasionally seeking guidance from
peers.

Steve has had the privilege of serving his nation in the military and various communities as a first responder. Witnessing the human condition at its most challenging has underscored the importance of sharing the inspiring stories of Canada's exceptional individuals. These remarkable men and women, who selflessly serve something greater than themselves, deserve recognition for their dedication and sacrifices.

“It fills me with pride to see my children following in my footsteps. My son serves as a law enforcement officer in a major Canadian city, while my daughter is a proud member of the Royal Canadian Air Force”

Their commitment to protecting our country and upholding our way of life is a testament to the values we hold dear. Together, we strive to honor the legacy of those who have served before us and inspire the next generation to continue the tradition of selfless service.

“STILL OVER THERE” HORIZON MUSIC STUDIOS 2023

After returning to Canada, a chance encounter with Julian Austin ledto an unexpected collaboration. Steve and Julian bonded over a shared experience at an army field exercise, where Julian tried his hand at shooting machine guns. This connection sparked the creation of the song "Still Over There," a project that simmered for years until we finally recorded it at Horizon Music Studios in Calgary, AB, releasing it as a single in the fall of 2023.

CANADA’S SPECIAL OPS FORCES – COUNTERTERRORISM

When the army had ideas of transitioning Steve from active operational military duties to a more training centric role, he opted to pursue a different path with Canada's Special Operations Forces Command. Over the next decade, Steve focused on counterterrorism and combating weapons of mass destruction globally, gathering experiences that inspired storytelling through music, and entertaining fellow soldiers with their shared adventures.

FIREFIGHTER & FIRST RESPONSE –TALES WOVEN INTO SONGS REPERTOIRE

Simultaneously, Steve delved into the world of firefighting, volunteering across Canada for over 20 years. Progressing from a Fire Fighter to roles in water rescue, vehicle extrication, HAZMAT response, and eventually serving as a Fire Chief post-military retirement, this journey enriched Steve G’s repertoire of tales woven into songs.

ENTERTAINING THE TROOPS

In 2018, a pivotal project aiding security agencies in the Middle East reshaped Steve's outlook, sparking his passion for live performance. This journey led to his debut performance of original songs on Canada Day in Amman, Jordan, marking a significant milestone in his artistic evolution.

In 2020, amidst the onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic, Steve embarked on a significant journey by joining the UN in South Sudan, Africa. His role involved coordinating security aspects of humanitarian aid to individuals facing diverse challenges, from sectarian conflicts to natural calamities. During his downtime, Steve dedicated himself to refining his musical talents, entertaining UN personnel with live country performances.

Naturally he had to write a song about it.  The inside joke recognized that not everything was perfect but compared to other challenges it was all  “Juba Good”

Meeting Bryan McNicholas and forming "MG"

Upon returning from Jordan in 2018, Steve met Bryan who had recently moved into the village of Bath.  Bryan came with decades of musical performing and editiing experience and introduced Steve to the music production process.

Their colloborations and shared love of music led them to form an informal duo known and “MG” by combining McNicholas and Giberson with a nod to Bryan's UK heritage in the “MG” moniker.
